  • Drink water : It is recommended to drink water over other beverages. Atleast, 8 glasses of water is recommended to drink. Avoid sodas and caffeine as they can potentially harm if used excessively. In summer or if you are engaged in excercises, you can increase your water intake even more to compensate for water loss through your sweat.
  • Maintain healthy diet and weight : Overweight is often linked with higher metabolic waste. It can put more load on your kidneys to clean your body. Avoiding excessive weight gain can keep your kidneys healthy. Anti-inflammatory diet can prevent inflammation in your kidneys  as well. (2)
  • Maintaining good blood pressure : High blood pressure can cause chronic kidney disease. It is recommended to maintain your blood pressure below 140/80 in healthy adults and below 130/80 in diabetic patients.

  • Avoid over the counter Chinese herbs and supplements: Even natural supplements should be taken with caution as they may contain heavy metals and herbs with diuretic effect which can be potentially harmful to the kidneys.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise : With extreme exercise muscle breakdown can occur which releases harmful breakdown products in the blood causing ultimately kidney damage. Although regular exercise is recommended to maintain healthy weight, strenuous exercise should be avoided.
