There are lot of misconceptions about Coronovirus these days. People are confused what to believe and what not to. I looked deeper into some of the facts to clarify some of these misconceptions.

1.Hot weather can kill coronavirus so summer is safe period!

FALSE

According to WHO multi-center collaborative network on SARS diagnosis (1)

  • Heat at 56°C kills the SARS coronavirus quite quickly.
  • Only minimal reduction in virus concentration after 21 days at 4°C and -80°C. This would indicate that the virus is more stable than the known human coronaviruses under room temperature.

2.Coronavirus does not affect kids!

FALSE

CDC is investigating multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in children, a rare but serious complication associated with COVID-19.(2) It is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed. Children with MIS-C may have a fever and various symptoms, including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or feeling extra tired. We do not yet know what causes MIS-C. However, many children with MIS-C had the virus that causes COVID-19 or had been around someone with COVID-19.

3.Coronavirus can spread by touching contaminated surface!

TRUE

The virus that cause COVID-19 spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. You can also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.(3)

7.Wearing a cloth mask protect you from getting the virus!

FALSE

Since the coronavirus is an extremely small virus, it can pass through the pores of cloth mask. However, wearing such mask can slow down the spread of virus from symptomatic or asymptomatic person carrying the virus. That’s why it’s important for everyone to practice social distancing (staying at least 6 feet away from slot gacor 2022 other people) and wear cloth face coverings in public settings. Cloth face coverings provide an extra layer to help prevent the respiratory droplets from traveling in the air and onto other people.(6)

8.Coronavirus was deliberately created or released by people in a lab!

FALSE

There is currently no credible evidence to support the claim that this coronavirus was originated from a laboratory-engineered coronavirus. It is more likely that it is a recombinant virus generated in nature between a bat and another coronavirus in an intermediate animal host. More studies are needed to explore this possibility and resolve the natural origin question.(7)

9.Ordering or buying products shipped from overseas will make you sick!

FALSE

World Health Organization says that the likelihood of becoming infected with the virus from a commercial package is low since it has likely traveled over several days and been exposed to different temperatures and conditions during transit.

10.Rinsing the nose with saline and salt water gargling protects you against coronavirus!

FALSE

Although these practices might reduce the viral load and decrease the viral shedding from the host but there is no evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from infection with the new coronavirus.

SUMMARY:

Although we are still learning more about the novel coronavirus there are few things we know for sure.

Coronavirus spread mainly from person-to-person via droplet method or through contact of contaminated surfaces.

It is important to wash hands for 20 sec to wash off the virus and maintain 6 feet of distance from each other. Avoid gatherings.
