If we consider the photon energy as the control parameter, it leads to a$4^\text{th}\$ power behaviour of the absorption cross section. However, the photon frequency is the more fundamental parameter as it directly affects the intensity of the laser, the photon energy and the atomic state. Therefore, it is more natural to consider the photon energy as the control parameter. In this regime, we observe that the effective absorption cross section scales linearly with the intensity of the exciting laser for any given atomic state. The scaling is independent of the relative phase shift between the driving fields, a result which has not been reported before. These results highlight that the relative phase shift between the driving fields does not influence the absorption cross section, once the intensity of the field is increased. However, for lower intensities, where laser cooling of the atoms is more efficient, the influence of the relative phase shift becomes important. In this regime, the absorption cross section shows a stronger dependence on the relative phase shift.
