After a bit of a break, I have been notified that there are over 1000 comments waiting for moderation. What should I do?

I have been out of the loop for quite a while and I have a bit of a backlog of moderation requests to go through. A few of these have been tagged as duplicate and I’ve tried to flag them accordingly.
However, many of them look as if the editor has posted a comment back to the author of the question. This is almost guaranteed to be the wrong thing to do since a comment is used for debugging and any of those comments should be rolled up into the question or closed.
In addition, a number of these comments have now been closed, but are still waiting to be reviewed.
What is the proper etiquette for this situation?

You are correct, these messages are unsolicited moderator messages, not comments. You can find the location of the moderator messages in your SO profile under “moderator messages” (access via the 10k link). You can email them to for the mods to consider.

So what you’re describing is that the “editor” who posted the comments is not authorized to be an editor (i.e. the user doesn’t have enough editing privileges). It’s not uncommon for moderators to send us alerts like this.
The best thing for you to do is flag the comments for moderator attention, and note your concerns on why you feel these comments should be removed. Moderators can perform additional actions on these comments if they see fit.
