For a set of simple chemical reactions, the three-body decomposition of the net reaction into three independent two-body reactions is investigated. The decomposition is applied to studies of the thermodynamics of the reactions using a physical approach. A reformulation of the thermodynamic model in the physical domain is proposed. A solvatochromic parameter, the two-variable affinities for potentials (2-VAPs), is introduced. This parameter is related to the frontier orbital energies for the reactants, intermediates, and products. It is shown that the reformulated model is consistent with the traditional one.
